Overweight & obesity: What you should know?

Centre for Foundation Studies (Kampar Campus) was honoured to host a webinar titled “Overweight & Obesity: What you should know?” on 26 June 2021 by Dr. Baskaran Gunasekaran. A total of 239 UTAR students, 60 UTAR staff and 15 members of the public joined the session.


Dr. Baskaran Gunasekaran is a lecturer from Faculty of Applied Sciences, UCSI University. Dr. Baskaran’s research interest is enzyme and metabolic biochemistry where he focuses on mechanisms involving non-communicable diseases (NCDs) including hypercholesterolemia, obesity and diabetes. He has authored many articles, book chapters and his works are published in various good impact journals.


This webinar aimed to raise awareness among the public on the importance and ways of managing obesity in order to lead a healthier life.  In the beginning of the webinar, the moderator gave a short introduction about the background of the speaker and highlighted that Malaysia has the highest prevalence of obesity among adults in South-east Asia.


After that, the speaker started his sharing by showing the worldwide and Malaysian statistics on the obesity rates and percentage of obesity by race in Malaysia. He further explains the definition of overweight and obesity as well as what is meant by desirable body weight and body mass index. Besides, the speaker highlighted the symptoms in people living with obesity and the factors that caused us to gain more body weight. 


Moreover, he gave the audience insights of the medical complications that can arise due to obesity and the seriousness of childhood obesity. The speaker also explained the methods that are available to determine body fat content and the treatments for those with body mass index above 27. In addition, the speaker encouraged the audience to follow the healthy lifestyle habits listed by him to prevent obesity among adults and children.


Last but not least, the webinar ended with an interactive question and answer session between the speaker and the audience.
