Cultivating leadership skills among SMJK Shing Chung students


UTAR Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Kampar Campus collaborated with the Division of Programme Promotion (DPP) to organise an engaging school project for SMJK Shing Chung. Held on 25 August 2023, the UTAR-SMJK Shing Chung Talent Development Project aimed to foster leadership skills, promote effective teamwork and offer valuable insights into university life. With an enthusiastic participation of 79 students accompanied by the School Vice Principal, Law Thing Hock and seven teachers, the event was a resounding success.


The event commenced with an inspiring opening speech by CFS Kampar Campus Deputy Director Lim Khiew Loon. He extended a warm welcome to the students and teachers, emphasising the importance of continuous learning and the willingness to ask questions without hesitation. Following the opening speech, Ally Tan Sze Man, a CFS Kampar Campus student and a scholarship holder, shared her remarkable journey and experiences. She shed light on the various activities she participated in, as well as her story of hard work in achieving her aspirations.


CFS Kampar Campus academic Kow Li Fen then delivered a captivating talk titled “Leadership skills from a psychological perspective.” She enlightened students about the five levels of leadership, challenging misconceptions and providing a comprehensive understanding of what makes a good leader. Next, CFS Kampar Campus academics Haw Ai Peng, Ho Wai Yew and Tang Sok Bee led an engaging team-building activity that focused on communication skills. Through interactive games, participants learned the importance of effective communication within a team. The day concluded with an informative campus tour guided by the DPP.


The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Liew Zhi Mun from Form 5 S3 expressed his gratitude for the event, stating, “I have gained new insights about leadership. Additionally, I learned from the game that communication skills are vital to becoming a great leader.” Liew Cheng Hou from Form 5 S1 shared his thoughts, saying, “The talk provided me with a good understanding of leadership, now I understand the characteristics of a good leader. Moreover, the campus is very grand and modern-looking.”
